Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a disease or chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels accompanied by disorders of carbon hydrate, lipid and protein metabolism. As a result of insulin function insufficiency, which can be caused by impaired insulin production by the Langerhans beta cells of the pancreatic gland or caused by a lack of responsiveness of the body's cells to insulin. Diabetic foot wounds in people with diabetes mellitus quickly become infected. Diabetic foot ulcers are the result of diabetes mellitus caused by neuropathy and peripheral artery disease. 55.4% of diabetes patients in Eastern Indonesia suffer from diabetic foot ulcers. The research design in this study is a laboratory experimental research design to test the toxicity of sea urchin shell extract as a candidate for sea urchin shell ointment against diabetic ulcers using the BSLT (Brine Shrimp Lethality Test) test method. The results of research conducted on the BSLT method toxicity test showed 100% mortality in all groups of test solutions, which was caused by chemical interactions between the ethyl acetate solvent and salt water which caused instability of the ethyl acetate liquid extract which was toxic to saline leach artemia larvae.
