Abstract

According to data from WHO (2023). Hypertension is the leading cause of premature death in the world. It is estimated to reach around 1.28 billion adults aged between 30–79 years, this disease is spread throughout the world, WHO further explains that the number of sufferers of this disease in 2023 mostly live in low- and middle-income countries. Hypertension or high blood pressure occurs when the pressure in your blood vessels is too high (140/90 mmHg or higher). This condition is common but can be serious if left untreated. Hypertension, especially in the elderly, is a disease that can be prevented by providing an understanding to patients about the causes of hypertension and how to prevent it. Objective: To provide knowledge to the elderly and their families about hypertension and how to prevent it. Method: Using banners and leaflets. There were 20 participants in this activity consisting of elderly and families of Sembalun Lawang Village residents. Results: This activity began with filling out a pre-test knowledge questionnaire about hypertension which was then continued with counseling by the resource person. Following the outreach activities, a post-test questionnaire was completed and blood pressure was checked. The post-test questionnaire after the outreach activities showed a 100% increase in knowledge. Conclusion: The outreach activities provided additional and enhanced knowledge to the elderly and their families about hypertension and its prevention, enabling them and their families to prevent it. Blood pressure measurements were conducted to raise awareness among the elderly about the importance of maintaining regular blood pressure monitoring.
